Bioenvision shareholder urges board to reduce Soros' influence

(Reuters) - Rouhandeh, chairman of SCO Capital Partners LLC, owns about
13.4 percent stake in the company.




According to the filing, two board members are employed by
Perseus-Soros/Aisling and two others work for companies in
which the Soros fund has or has had an investment. This
represents 67 percent of the board, while Perseus-Soros/Aisling
owns only 12 percent of the company, the letter said.

US STOCKS-Indexes flat as subprime worries offset takeovers

(Reuters) - NEW YORK, June 18 - U.S. stocks were little
changed on Monday as lingering worries about the subprime
mortgage market offset optimism about corporate takeovers.




Shares of Bear Stearns fell 1.5 percent after the Wall
Street Journal reported that investment bank Merrill Lynch
has seized $400 million in assets of a troubled hedge

Dollar and yen dips as carry in focus

(Reuters) - The dollar weakened against most major currencies on Monday, tracking a slide in U.S. bond yields, while the yen fell to near 4-1/2 year lows on fading expectations of higher Japanese interest rates.

The greenback extended losses after data on Friday showed underlying consumer price gains were smaller than expected last month. This sparked a bond market rally that pulled U.S. yields down from a five-year peak hit last week and pushed the euro above $1.34 for the first time since early June.

Passport, Please: Quebec-Vermont Library's Books Are on Wrong Side of Law

(Bloomberg) -- Canadian readers at the Haskell Free
Library and Opera House soon will need more than a library card
to borrow books: They'll have to show their passports.

The library sits half in Stanstead, Quebec, and half in
Derby Line, Vermont, and the front door is on the Vermont side.
Under U.S. rules taking effect in January, Canadian patrons
won't be able to reach the door unless they show a passport to
cross into the U.S.

(Reuters) - It would be the largest solo deal in the firm's 18-year history and its first acquisition of a company with U.S. headquarters.




BC Partners was locked in an auction with a bidding duo consisting of Liberty Media Holding Corp. and EchoStarCommunications Corp. , which could make a fresh offer, according to the Wall Street Journal, which cited people familiar with the matter.

Canadian Stocks Rise to Record on Metals Prices; Goldcorp, Agrium Advance

(Bloomberg) -- Canadian stocks rose, pushing the main
equity index to a record, as such raw-materials producers as
Goldcorp Inc. gained on higher metals prices. Agrium Inc. led
agricultural companies higher after it raised its profit forecast.

The Standard & Poor's/TSX Composite Index added 46.03, or 0.3
percent, to 14,183.44 as of 9:40 a.m. in Toronto. The benchmark
built on last week's gain of 2.5 percent, the best since March. A
close at this level would exceed its record close of 14,146.74
reached June 4.

Pollution Permits to Increase European Power Bills as E.ON, Goldman Profit

(Bloomberg) -- Pollution permits, the biggest money-
loser for commodity investors this year, are poised for a rebound
that may spark a 10 percent jump in electricity costs for the 260
million consumers from London to Bucharest.

Prices for allowances that give utilities and factories the
right to pump a ton of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere will
climb 20 percent in the next 12 months, according to Lueder
Schumacher, an analyst at Dresdner Kleinwort in London. The
reason: Governments are handing out fewer certificates in the
three-year program.

Brazil's Real Climbs on Outlook for Benign Inflation, Faster GDP Growth

(Bloomberg) -- Brazil's real rose to its strongest
since October 2000 on speculation benign inflation and faster
growth will keep luring foreign investment to the local stock and
bond markets.

The real advanced as much as 0.7 percent to 1.8995 per
dollar, the strongest since hitting 1.8990 per dollar on Oct. 31,
2000. It traded at 1.9012 per dollar at 9 a.m. New York time. It
rose 2.4 percent last week and has gained 12.3 percent this year,
making it the best performer among the 16 currencies most traded
against the dollar.

Fired London Traders Try to Use U.K. Whistle-Blower Law to Win Big Payout

(Bloomberg) -- Cantor Fitzgerald LP says it refused
to pay the former head of a U.K. trading unit millions of dollars
in incentives because he'd quit. Lewis Findlay says he was pushed
out for complaining about business practices and is using a
whistle-blower law to seek $30 million.

The lawsuit is one of at least 10 in London courts involving
executives earning six-figure salaries who are suing under
legislation designed to protect employees who raise workplace
concerns about illegal or dangerous behavior.

JP Morgan says Boeing 787 up to 4 months late

(Reuters) - The head of Boeing's commercial airplane unit, Scott
Carson, said earlier on Monday that the plane was still on
schedule for roll out in July and test flight in August or

Consol Energy to buy Amvest for $335 million

(Reuters) - The purchase would add about 200 million tons of low-sulfur coal reserves to Consol's holdings, as well as four coal preparation plants.




In 2006, Amvest shipped about 4.9 million tons of coal, with about 84 percent of that sold to domestic and international utilities.

(Reuters) - First, banks underwriting the deals would be exposed, and
secondly, a reappraisal of market risk stemming from failed
mergers could curtail access to credit for lower-rated

European Power Prices May Jump Because of Warm Rivers, Merrill Lynch Says

(Bloomberg) -- European power prices may jump this
summer because of limits on how much hot water utilities can
return to rivers and seas when the weather is warm, Merrill Lynch
& Co. said.

Utilities in Germany, including E.ON AG and Vattenfall AB,
have been forced to reduce capacity in at least one nuclear plant
in Europe's biggest power market because of environmental
restrictions on the water used to cool facilities.

Rosneft First-Quarter Net Income Falls 25 Percent on Higher Taxes, Costs

(Bloomberg) -- OAO Rosneft, set to become Russia's
largest oil producer, said profit declined 25 percent in the
first quarter on higher export taxes and a weaker dollar.

Net income declined to $602 million from $802 million a
year earlier, state-run Rosneft said in an e-mailed statement
today. That is 7.5 percent higher than the $560 million estimate
in a Bloomberg survey of seven analysts. Revenue advanced 12
percent to $8.2 billion, more than the $8 billion in the survey.

Indonesia Rupiah Gains on Investors' Risk Appetite: World's Biggest Mover

(Bloomberg) -- Indonesia's rupiah had its biggest
advance in more than a year as overseas investors returned to
the country's financial markets. Bonds rose.

The rupiah gained 1.6 percent, the biggest fluctuation of
any major currency, as the Jakarta Composite Index of stocks
rose as much as 0.8 percent to a record. The Philippine peso and
Malaysian ringgit also rose as a rebound in U.S. Treasuries gave
investors confidence to invest in emerging markets.

Tullow, Anadarko make big Ghana oil find

(Reuters) - London-based Tullow Oil Plc announced the discovery of up to 600 million barrels of high-quality oil at a block in Ghana owned with Anadarko Petroleum Corp., sending Tullow shares up over 10 percent.

Tullow also said in a statement on Monday the structure it successfully drilled in the West Cape Three Points Block extended into an adjacent exploration block, which Tullow also co-owns with Texas-based Anadarko, suggesting further potential upside for the partners.

German Day-Ahead Power Price Climbs on Forecast for Near-Zero Wind Output

(Bloomberg) -- German power prices for next-day
delivery climbed on forecasts wind power output will drop to
almost nothing, reducing supplies in Europe's biggest
electricity market. Year-ahead prices fell.

Baseload German power climbed as much as 15 euros, or 38
percent, to 55 euros ($74) a megawatt hour from the close for
Friday delivery, the last working day, according to prices from
GFI Group Inc. on Bloomberg. The contract traded at 54.85 euros
at 10 a.m. in Berlin. Baseload refers to electricity delivered
around the clock.

BHP, Teck, Newmont May Have Reduced Copper Processing Fees, Macquarie Says

(Bloomberg) -- Mining companies, including the
world's largest BHP Billiton Ltd., may have reduced fees paid to
smelters for processing raw material into refined copper under
mid-year contracts, according to Macquarie Bank Ltd.

Some agreements on so-called treatment and refining charges,
or TC/RCs, have been reached by miners, including BHP, Teck
Cominco Ltd. and Newmont Mining Corp., the bank said in a report
today. Miners may have lowered fees from previous settlements,
and either excluded or limited ``price-participation'' clauses
allowing smelters to benefit from copper price gains, it said.

Alitalia shares slide amid worries about sale

(Reuters) - Aeroflot denied a report by Russian news agency Interfax that it had pulled out of the bidding for the government's 49.9 percent stake but said a purchase would depend on price.

Index dropped 3,500 euros to 190,500 euros at 9:50 a.m. in
London, according to JPMorgan Chase & Co. prices on Bloomberg.
The index is at a two-week low.

Emirates orders 8 more A380 from Airbus

(Reuters) - Emirates said it had not yet made a decision on its requirement for 100 aircraft in the middle of the market, which pits the Airbus A350 XWB against the faster-selling Boeing 787.

Australian Mortgage-Backed Bond Sales Set To Rise to a Record, S&P Says

(Bloomberg) -- Sales of bonds backed by Australian
mortgages are set to rise to a record this year because of demand
from foreign investors and a recovery in the housing market,
according to Standard and Poor's.

Sales of the securities in the world's fourth-largest home-
loan securitization market will likely reach A$60 billion ($50.6
billion) by year-end, Alistair Ingram, credit analyst at S&P in
Melbourne, said today.

Kenya's central bank cuts interest rate to 8.5 pct

(Reuters) - Kenya's central bank said on Monday said it had cut its key CBR interest rate to 8.5 percent from 10 percent.

"The Monetary Policy Advisory Committee (MPAC) held its fifteenth meeting on Wednesday ... and advised the CBK (Central Bank of Kenya) to set the CBR at 8.5 percent," a weekly bulletin from the central bank said. "The Central Bank concurred with the recommendation."

(Reuters) - LONDON, June 18 - The euro hit an all-time high
against the yen on Monday amid expectations that Japan's low
interest rates will rise only gradually, while stocks reached
fresh peaks on confidence the global economy will remain strong.




The New Zealand dollar held firm despite suspicions the
central bank had again interevened to sell the high-yielding,
high-flying currency, while U.S. and euro zone government bonds

House Prices in London Gain at Slowest Pace in Five Months, Rightmove Says

(Bloomberg) -- London house prices rose at the
slowest pace in five months in June as the cost of a home fell in
more than half of the U.K. capital's boroughs, Rightmove Plc said.

Asking prices increased 0.7 percent from a month earlier to
387,898 pounds ($764,000), half the pace of May, as values fell in
17 of the city's 32 districts, the U.K.'s biggest real-estate Web
site said in a statement today. Gains across the U.K. outpaced
London for the first time since January, with a 0.8 percent
increase in June.

Platinum Gains as Anglo Platinum Halts Rustenberg Mine; Palladium Advances

(Bloomberg) -- Platinum rose the most in two weeks
after South Africa's Anglo Platinum Ltd., the world's biggest
producer, halted output at its largest mine following the deaths
of five workers in the past two weeks. Palladium also advanced.

The Rustenburg mine will be closed for as long as seven
days, reducing annual production by between 10,000 and 15,000
ounces, Johannesburg-based Anglo Platinum said in a statement
today. Platinum supply fell short of demand in seven of the past
eight years, helping prices to more than triple since 1998.

U.K. Natural Gas Gains on Forecast for Rising Demand, Decline in Supplies

(Bloomberg) -- U.K. natural gas for intraday
delivery rose as forecasts showed demand may increase today and
supplies of the fuel may decline. The higher within-day costs
boosted day-ahead and next-month prices.

Gas for delivery within day at the National Balancing
Point, the U.K. trading hub, added 0.7 percent to 22.4 pence a
therm at 8:29 a.m. in London, according to energy broker
Spectron Group Plc. That equals $4.44 a million British thermal
units. A therm is 100,000 Btus.

Zimbabwe Bindura sees big drop in '06 nickel output

(Reuters) - Zimbabwe's Bindura Nickel posted a nine percent fall in processed nickel output in 2006 because of constrained production and equipment breakdowns at its two mines, a senior company official said on Monday.

Bindura, the country's largest nickel producer, also saw ore production declining to 1.52 million tonnes, from 1.65 million in 2005.

Russian Economy to Expand 6.3 Percent a Year Through 2010, Naryshkin Says

(Bloomberg) -- Russia's economy will expand at an
annual rate of 6.3 percent in the five years through 2010,
Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Naryshkin said.

The government will meet its inflation target of 8 percent
or less this year as the pace slows from 4.7 percent in the
first five months of the year, Naryshkin told investors today at
a conference organized by Renaissance Capital in Moscow.

UPDATE 1-Akzo Nobel says ICI rejected takeover approach

(Reuters) - "Akzo Nobel will continue to evaluate all strategic
opportunities, including ICI, based on a disciplined and
value-driven approach to earnings and returns over cost of
capital," it said in a statement.




It said there was no certainty it would make a further
proposal to ICI or that any offer would result.

Allianz, Hochtief, Metro, Volkswagen May Move: German Equity Preview

(Bloomberg) -- The following stocks may rise or fall
in German markets today. Stock symbols are in parentheses after
the company names and prices are from the Xetra close June 15
unless otherwise stated.

DAX futures expiring in September rose 21.50, or 0.3
percent, to 8129.50 at 8:18 a.m. in Frankfurt. Germany's
benchmark DAX jumped 181.48, or 2.3 percent, to 8030.64 on the
Xetra electronic-trading system.
