Canadian Stocks May Rise on Profit Optimism, Takeover Talk, Led by CN Rail

(Bloomberg) -- Canadian stocks may rise on optimism
that near-record commodity prices may boost profits and trigger
more takeovers. Canadian National Railway Co., which is expected to
report quarterly earnings today, may lead the advance.

The Standard & Poor's/TSX Composite Index fell 42.89, or 0.3
percent, to 14,582.87 on July 20 in Toronto. The nation's benchmark
has risen 27 percent in the past year and reached a record last
week on global demand for energy and raw-materials, and record
takeovers of Canadian companies.

Canadian Stocks Decline, Led by Biovail; Royal, Bank of Nova Scotia Rise

(Bloomberg) -- Canadian stocks fell, led by Biovail
Corp. after regulators rejected the drugmaker's application for
approval of an antidepressant.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index dropped for the first time in four
days, falling 31.50, or 0.2 percent, to 14,594.26 in Toronto at
10:02 a.m. in Toronto.

Canadian Stocks Gain on Takeover Talk; Alcan, Research in Motion Advance

(Bloomberg) -- Canadian stocks rose for a third time in
four days and headed for a weekly gain, as takeover speculation
lifted shares of raw-materials producers and telephone companies.

Alcan Inc. advanced on a report that Rio Tinto Group hired
bankers to help it consider a bid for the aluminum maker. Telus
Corp. extended gains made following BCE Inc.'s takeover last week
in the biggest buyout. Research in Motion Ltd. fell after reaching
a record yesterday.

Canadian Stocks Gain for Third Day; Telus Rises on Buyout Speculation

(Bloomberg) -- Canadian stocks rose for a third day
on speculation that Telus Corp. may seek to top a buyout offer
accepted last week by BCE Inc. from the Ontario Teachers' Pension
Plan.

Gains in the market were limited by Research In Motion Ltd.,
whose shares declined after reaching a record yesterday.

Canadian Stocks Rise on Takeover Speculation, After Deals by BCE and Aur

(Bloomberg) -- Canadian stocks rose on takeover
speculation after BCE Inc., Canada's biggest phone company, was
sold for C$34.2 billion ($32.1 billion) in the largest leveraged
buyout.

The speculation was fanned by an agreement by Teck Cominco
Ltd. to buy Aur Resources Inc. for C$4.1 billion. The Standard &
Poor's/TSX Composite Index rose 117.92, or 0.9 percent, to 14,024.

Canadian Stocks Gain After Research In Motion Profit Rises; BCE Advances

(Bloomberg) -- Canadian stocks rose the most in two
weeks after Research In Motion Ltd. announced a stock split and
first-quarter profit that exceeded analyst estimates.

Research In Motion, the maker of BlackBerry e-mail phones had
the biggest jump in nine months and reached a new high. BCE Inc.,
Canada's biggest phone company, gained after the Ontario Teachers'
Pension Plan said it made bids for all BCE shares it doesn't
already own.

Canadian Stocks Gain for Second Day on Meridian Gold Takeover, Rising Oil

(Bloomberg) -- Canadian stocks rose for a second day,
led by commodity producers, after Meridian Gold Inc. received a
takeover proposal from rival bullion miners and prices of gold and
copper advanced.

Rising crude oil and natural-gas prices lifted such energy
producers as EnCana Corp., which had dragged the Standard &
Poor's/TSX Composite Index to three consecutive losses before
yesterday.

Canadian Stocks Decline on Metals, Crude Oil Prices; Talisman Shares Fall

(Bloomberg) -- Canadian stocks declined for a fourth
time in five days, led by such energy and raw-materials producers
as Talisman Energy Inc. and Teck Cominco Ltd., as prices for crude
oil, copper and gold declined.

Oil futures fell from a nine-month high in New York after a
strike in Nigeria ended. Copper dropped a third day in London on
concern that Asian demand may be slowing, while gold declined on
speculation a drop in European equity markets may cut demand for
bullion.

Canadian Stocks Rise to Record on Metals Prices; Goldcorp, Agrium Advance

(Bloomberg) -- Canadian stocks rose, pushing the main
equity index to a record, as such raw-materials producers as
Goldcorp Inc. gained on higher metals prices. Agrium Inc. led
agricultural companies higher after it raised its profit forecast.

The Standard & Poor's/TSX Composite Index added 46.03, or 0.3
percent, to 14,183.44 as of 9:40 a.m. in Toronto. The benchmark
built on last week's gain of 2.5 percent, the best since March. A
close at this level would exceed its record close of 14,146.74
reached June 4.
