Copper Futures Rise Most in a Week in New York on Strike by Mexico Workers

(Bloomberg) -- Copper futures in New York jumped
the most in more than a week after Southern Copper Corp. workers
went on strike at three mines in Mexico.

Employees began a work stoppage at Cananea, Mexico's
largest copper mine, and the Taxco and San Martin zinc mines, a
union spokeswoman said yesterday. Copper has gained 10 percent
since May 30 as labor unrest hampered production in Latin
American countries.

Latin American Stocks Rally; Mexico, Brazil Shares Have Best Gain in Month

(Bloomberg) -- Stocks in Latin America rallied as
analysts advised investors to buy companies with better-than-
expected profit growth after last week's global sell-off.

Brazil's Bovespa Index jumped 1,455.21, or 2.8 percent, to
54,377.44 as of 3 p.m. in New York. Mexico's Bolsa index rallied
747.88, or 2.5 percent, to 30,983.05. It was the biggest gain in
both markets since March 21.

Mexico's Peso, Bonds Rise as Demand for Emerging Market Assets Rebounds

(Bloomberg) -- Mexico's peso and local-currency
bonds rose as higher prices for global stocks fueled investor
demand for riskier emerging-market securities.

The peso rose 0.4 percent to 10.9699 per dollar at 10:15
a.m. New York time. The peso's gain was the sixth-best
performance against the dollar among the 26 most-traded
emerging-market currencies.

UPDATE 1-Mexico holds rate steady despite higher inflation

(Reuters) - The bank said it sees inflation, which has been stubbornly
trending higher, closing in on its long-term 3 percent target
by the end of 2008 even though food prices are still high.




Mexico's 12-month inflation nudged into the central bank's
danger zone in the first half of July, increasing expectations
of an interest rate hike some time this year, although most
analyst did not expect an increase on Friday.

Mexico stocks gain after strong U.S. economic data

(Reuters) - The peso was flat at 10.9875 per dollar. The
currency was unchanged after the central bank kept interest
rates steady as expected at a monthly monetary policy review.




Data showed the economy in the United States, Mexico's main
trading partner, grew faster than expected in the second
quarter.

Mexico's Televisa says gaming tax too high

(Reuters) - Mexico's president, Felipe Calderon, last month presented a
long-awaited fiscal reform plan, part of which would close off
corporate tax loopholes.




The government wants to slap a 20 percent tax on gaming as
part of the bill, which is expected to get the go-ahead before
Congress starts discussing next year's budget in September.

UPDATE 1-Mexico's GAP 2nd-qtr net profit rises 55 pct

(Reuters) - Revenue in the quarter rose 16.1 percent to 847 million
pesos, the company said on Monday.




GAP operates 12 airports in Mexico, including Guadalajara,
Tijuana, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta.

Mexican stocks up, driven by Grupo Mexico gains

(Reuters) - Citigroup raised its long-term copper price assumption to
$1.45 per pound, saying the copper market was enjoying a repeat
of its performance in the 'super cycles' of 50 and 100 years
ago.




Grupo Mexico jumped 1.99 percent to 80.97
after the announcement.

Mexico's Peso Gains Most in More Than a Week on Interest-Rate, CPI Outlook

(Bloomberg) -- Mexico's peso gained the most in
more than a week on expectations the central bank this week
will keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged at its highest
since March 2006.

Policy makers will leave the overnight lending rate at 7.25
percent at their July 27 policy meeting, 13 of 15 economists
surveyed by Bloomberg predicted. Two expected policy makers to
raise the rate to 7.5 percent. A report tomorrow may show
consumer prices rose to the highest since January in the first
half of this month, a separate Bloomberg economists' survey
showed.

Mexican Peso Declines After China Raises Interest Rates to Cool Expansion

(Bloomberg) -- Mexico's peso fell after China raised
interest rates, sparking speculation that demand for commodities
including oil, Mexico's biggest export, will fall.

Revenue from oil exports is Mexico's biggest source of
dollar inflows and funds almost 40 percent of government
spending. Oil for September delivery fell 0.1 percent to $76.01 a
barrel at 10:51 a.m. in New York.

Bernanke, Central Bankers Get Heartburn From Rising Food-Commodity Prices

(Bloomberg) -- Rising prices for food, from yogurt
in the U.S. to steak in South Africa, are causing heartburn at
the world's most powerful central banks.

The fastest increase in food-commodity prices in at least a
decade has already led monetary authorities in England,
Mexico, Chile and South Africa to lift borrowing costs. It is
also sowing doubts about the U.S. Federal Reserve's focus on
core inflation, which excludes food and energy, and about
China's gradual approach to tightening credit.

Bovespa Slides in Brazil, Led by Petrobras; Wal-Mart de Mexico Declines

(Bloomberg) -- Brazil's main stock index fell for the
first time in three days, led by Petroleo Brasileiro SA, after the
federal police arrested employees on allegations they manipulated
contracts at the state-controlled oil company.

The Bovespa Index of the most-traded stocks on the Sao Paulo
exchange shed 561.03, or 1 percent, to 55,882.70, falling from a
July 6 record. Mexico's Bolsa index slid 345.23, or 1.1 percent, to
31,743.02.

Mexico's Bolsa Falls, Led by Walmex, as Earnings Slow; Usiminas, CSN Slip

(Bloomberg) -- Mexico's Bolsa index fell for a second
day after Wal-Mart de Mexico SA, the biggest retailer in Latin
America, reported lower-than-expected earnings.

The Bolsa index slid 212.10, or 0.7 percent, to 31,876.15 as
of 12:20 p.m. New York time. Brazil's main stock index fell for the
first time in three days.

Slim's Telecom Companies Face New Antitrust Inquiry in Mexico; Shares Fall

(Bloomberg) -- Carlos Slim, who vies with Bill Gates
as the world's richest man, may face increased scrutiny at home
as Mexican antitrust regulators step up efforts to curb the
dominance of the telephone companies that created his fortune.

Mexico's Federal Competition Commission wants to identify
markets where Telefonos de Mexico SAB and America Movil SAB have
a share large enough that would require special regulation to
encourage new entrants, commission president Eduardo Perez Motta
said. The probe will begin before the end of the year, he said.

Mexico's Bolsa Falls on Telephone Antitrust Probe: Peruvian Miners Advance

(Bloomberg) -- Mexico's main stock index fell,
retreating from a record, after regulators vowed to step up efforts
to curb the dominance of phone companies in the country.

Mexico's Bolsa index dropped 323.59, or 1 percent, to
32088.25, led by America Movil SAB. America Movil, Latin America's
largest mobile phone company, fell 1.17 pesos, or 3.3 percent, the
most since April 30, to 34.40 pesos. Telefonos de Mexico SAB, the
country's largest fixed-line company, fell 5.3 percent, the most
since December, 2000.

Copper Futures Post Second Weekly Gain Amid Labor Unrest, Tight Supplies

(Bloomberg) -- Copper, little changed in New York,
capped a second straight weekly gain as labor unrest raised
concern production may be cut during a time of tight supplies.

Workers have started or threatened strikes in Chile, the
world's largest copper producer, Peru and Mexico. Inventories of
the metal in London have dropped 42 percent this year as
suppliers failed to meet rising demand from China, the world's
biggest consumer of the metal. The price of copper has gained 6.2
percent in the last two weeks amid the labor disputes.

Mexico's Bolsa Gains on Outlook for Tax Legislation: Latin American Stocks

(Bloomberg) -- Mexico's Bolsa index rose for a sixth
day as prospects improved for the passage of a tax measure that
could spur government spending on infrastructure and energy.

The benchmark Bolsa index advanced 62.16, or 0.2 percent, to
32,179.99 as of 12:19 p.m. in New York, led by Grupo Elektra SA,
Mexico's biggest electronics retailer.

Mexico's Bolsa Gains on Debt Rating Outlook, Led by America Movil and ICA

(Bloomberg) -- Mexico's Bolsa index rose for a fifth
day as investors bet the country's credit rating will lbe raised by
Standard & Poor's, reducing government borrowing costs and fueling
spending.

The benchmark Bolsa index advanced 234.41, or 0.8 percent, to
31,655.10 as of 10:56 a.m. in New York, led by America Movil SAB,
Latin America's biggest mobile-phone company.
