Nedbank First-Half Net Rose 42 Percent as It Boosted Corporate Lending

(Bloomberg) -- Nedbank Group Ltd., South Africa's
fourth-biggest bank, said first-half profit rose 42 percent,
boosted by gains in corporate lending. The company expects 2007
earnings to increase by as much as 33 percent.

Net income in the six months to June 30 advanced to
2.78 billion rand ($389 million), or 7.05 rand a share, from
1.95 billion rand, or 5.77 rand, a year earlier, the Johannesburg-
based company said in a statement today. Annual profit-per share
will rise 22 percent to 33 percent, it said.

S.Africa fuel strike into 5th day, motorists queue

(Reuters) - A strike by South African fuel workers entered a fifth day on Friday, prompting motorists in the economic capital to queue at filling stations as stocks dwindled.

"It has been a mad rush since 3 a.m. (0100 GMT) this morning," said Ashwin Chiba, manager of a filling station in the centre of Johannesburg, one of the few still with fuel.

S.African stocks slide on global jitters; Lewis up

(Reuters) - South African stocks hit an almost four-month low on Friday as weaker global markets rattled financial stocks but retailer Lewis bucked the trend after it said sales rose and its credit book was in good shape.

The Johannesburg Top-40 index of blue-chip stocks dropped 1.11 percent to 24,915.31 points, its lowest closing level since April 11. The All-share index fell 1 percent to 27,582.01 points.

S.African stocks firmer, led by resources and banks

(Reuters) - Heavyweight miners Anglo American and BHP Billiton and bank shares led South Africa's bourse higher on Monday after sliding over 3 percent last Friday, spooked by a global market sell-off.

A Johannesburg-based trader said both Anglo and Billiton were recovering from being oversold last week, along with other resource stocks and banks.

S.African stocks slide on global jitters

(Reuters) - South African blue-chip stocks fell by more than 1.5 percent on Tuesday as a grim outlook for the U.S. housing market hit global equities and investors booked profits in local financial stocks.

The Johannesburg Top-40 index of blue-chip stocks slid as much as 1.55 percent but recovered slightly to trade 1.34 percent lower at 26,738.73 points by 1422 GMT. The All-share index dropped 1.22 percent to 29,521.29 points.

Miners boost S.Africa stocks; outlook hits Angloplat

(Reuters) - South African shares muscled to a record high on Thursday as a stronger gold price and Rio Tinto's bid for Alcan powered mining stocks but Anglo Platinum sank on a disappointing trading update.

The Johannesburg Top-40 index of blue-chip stocks rose 0.54 percent to 27,028.86 points, a historic closing peak, while the All-share index gained 0.49 percent to 29,789.95 points, also a record.

UPDATE 1-S.Africa ANC opens door for Mbeki to remain leader

(Reuters) - MIDRAND, South Africa, June 29 - South Africa's
ruling African National Congress said on Friday it favoured
keeping the current rules for electing the party's leader,
opening the door for President Thabo Mbeki to seek a third term.




"There is no need to change the current procedures," ANC
General Secretary Kgalema Motlanthe told reporters after about
1,500 activists met outside Johannesburg to discuss the party's
policies and the process to elect a leader in December.

MTN mulls building fixed network in South Africa

(Reuters) - African mobile operator MTN may build its own fixed-line network in South Africa to trim the levies it has to pay former monopoly Telkom to use its backbone and to meet demand for Internet access.

MTN's new head of southern and east Africa, Tim Lowry, said the company had paid about 10 million rand to build a pilot fibre optic cable linking Johannesburg's business hubs and may expand this to other key areas.

Platinum Gains as Anglo Platinum Halts Rustenberg Mine; Palladium Advances

(Bloomberg) -- Platinum rose the most in two weeks
after South Africa's Anglo Platinum Ltd., the world's biggest
producer, halted output at its largest mine following the deaths
of five workers in the past two weeks. Palladium also advanced.

The Rustenburg mine will be closed for as long as seven
days, reducing annual production by between 10,000 and 15,000
ounces, Johannesburg-based Anglo Platinum said in a statement
today. Platinum supply fell short of demand in seven of the past
eight years, helping prices to more than triple since 1998.
