Fortis, Impreglio, Munich Re, SES Global, Thomson: European Equity Preview

(Bloomberg) -- The following stocks may rise or fall
in European markets. Prices are from the last close.

The Dow Jones Stoxx 600 fell 1.3 percent to 372.03. The Dow
Jones Stoxx 50 Index fell 1.4 percent to 3718.31. The Euro Stoxx
50 Index, a benchmark for the 13 nations using the euro, declined
1.4 percent to 4229.19.

US STOCKS-Indexes fall on fears of more credit problems

(Reuters) - The Dow Jones industrial average was down 30.98
points, or 0.23 percent, at 13,327.33. The Standard & Poor's
500 Index was down 6.10 points, or 0.41 percent, at
1,467.81. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 17.07
points, or 0.66 percent, at 2,566.21.

News Corp, Dow Jones deal expected Tuesday-source

(Reuters) - By Robert MacMillan and Kenneth Li



NEW YORK, July 31 - Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. is expected to reach a definitive agreement to buy Dow Jones & Co. Inc. on Tuesday evening, capping his three-month pursuit of the publisher of the Wall Street Journal, a source familiar with the matter said.

US STOCKS-Indexes pare gains after news from home lender

(Reuters) - The Dow Jones industrial average was up 33.73
points, or 0.25 percent, at 13,392.04. The Standard & Poor's
500 Index was up 3.38 points, or 0.23 percent, at
1,477.29. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 2.86
points, or 0.11 percent, at 2,580.42.

US STOCKS-Wall St trims gains, Nasdaq dips

(Reuters) - A rise in oil prices to a 12-month high also added to
nervousness.




The Dow Jones industrial average was up 47.63
points, or 0.36 percent, at 13,405.94. The Standard & Poor's
500 Index was up 3.33 points, or 0.23 percent, at
1,477.24. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 0.06
points, or 0.00 percent, at 2,583.34.

IPO VIEW-Weak market seen likely to hurt new offerings

(Reuters) - The Dow Jones industrials average dropped again on Friday,
adding to the losses suffered on Thursday as investors dumped
stocks on deepening signs of weakness in the housing market and
deterioration in the credit market. Thursday marked the worst
single session since the Feb. 27 global market sell-off.




The market slump sets a tough environment for new
offerings, analysts said.

US STOCKS-Futures slide on oil, housing, credit woes

(Reuters) - S&P 500 futures were down 12.60 points, below fair
value, a mathematical formula that evaluates pricing by taking
into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration
on the contract.




Dow Jones industrial average futures were down 87
points, and Nasdaq 100 futures were off 11 points.

Global stocks lower on credit woes

(Reuters) - As U.S. stocks continued to fall after a sharply lower opening, the decline triggered the New York Stock Exchange's downside restrictions on program trading at 11:06 a.m. ET.




At 11:42 a.m. the Dow Jones industrial average was down 202.41 points, or 1.47 percent, at 13,582.66. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 26.88 points, or 1.77 percent, at 1,491.21 and the Nasdaq Composite Index was down 42.47 points, or 1.60 percent, at 2,605.70.

US STOCKS-Wall St rebounds at open on profit optimism

(Reuters) - The Dow Jones industrial average was up 101.94
points, or 0.74 percent, at 13,818.89. The Standard & Poor's
500 Index was up 9.84 points, or 0.65 percent, at
1,520.88. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 21.83
points, or 0.83 percent, at 2,661.69.

US STOCKS-Wall Street drops at open on profit woes

points, or 0.56 percent, at 13,865.71. The Standard & Poor's

US STOCKS-Wall St ends higher on M&A news, profits

(Reuters) - The Dow Jones industrial average was up 92.75
points, or 0.67 percent, at 13,943.83. The Standard & Poor's
500 Index was up 7.28 points, or 0.47 percent, at
1,541.38. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 2.98
points, or 0.11 percent, at 2,690.58.

U.S. Stocks Gain on M&A; GlobalSantaFe, Transocean, Merck Shares Advance

(Bloomberg) -- U.S. stocks gained after $35 billion
in acquisitions allayed concern that this year's record pace of
takeovers will slow and Merck & Co.'s earnings topped analysts'
estimates.

GlobalSantaFe Corp., the world's second-biggest offshore
oil and gas driller, climbed to a record after agreeing to be
bought by larger rival Transocean Inc. Merck jumped the most in
more than three months and accounted for almost a third of the
Dow Jones Industrial Average's advance.

points, or 0.51 percent, at 13,921.23. The Standard & Poor's
500 Index was up 7.89 points, or 0.51 percent, at

`Overlooked Asset,' Rupee Effect, Harry Potter and the Aftermath: Timshel

(Bloomberg) -- If Rupert Murdoch changed his mind
and bought Dow Jones & Co. in a stock swap, the purchase would
hardly dent News Corp.'s treasury.

The $5 billion that Murdoch has offered for the publisher
of the Wall Street Journal is equivalent to 204 million of his
company's Class A shares, which include voting rights, or 220
million non-voting Class B shares.

US STOCKS-Futures extend losses on Caterpillar results

(Reuters) - S&P 500 futures were down 1.9 points, below fair
value, a mathematical formula that evaluates pricing by taking
into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration
on the contract.




Dow Jones industrial average futures dropped 22
points on the Caterpillar news. Nasdaq 100 futures were
down 36 points.

U.S. Stocks Rise on Earnings; IBM Leads Dow Average, S&P 500 to Records

(Bloomberg) -- U.S. stocks gained after
International Business Machines Corp. and Bank of America Corp.
reported earnings that topped analysts' estimates.

IBM, the world's biggest provider of computer services,
climbed the most since 2003 and led the Standard & Poor's 500
Index and Dow Jones Industrial Average to records after saying
software acquisitions boosted results. Bank of America, the
second-largest U.S. bank, rose on private-equity gains and
investment-banking revenue growth.

UPDATE 1-Dow Jones quarterly profit falls, revenue rises

(Reuters) - NEW YORK, July 19 - Dow Jones & Co. Inc. , which soon could be bought by News Corp. for $5 billion, said one-time charges lowered quarterly profit, while its digital business pushed up revenue despite lower ad sales at its flagship Wall Street Journal.



Second-quarter profit fell to $21 million, or 25 cents a share, from $28.8 million, or 34 cents a share, a year earlier.

Dow Jones quarterly profit falls, revenue rises

(Reuters) - Excluding special items, Dow Jones earned 45 cents per share compared with 39 cents per share last year.




Items included a 13-cent charge for stock-based compensation expense as a result of the company's share price increase after the News Corp. offer came out, as well as a 7-cent restructuring charge.

Dow Jones director Li probed on insider trade: WSJ

(Reuters) - Li is chairman and chief executive officer of Bank of East Asia , a mid-tier Hong Kong lender. He is also a member of Hong Kong's Legislative Council.




Dow Jones's board on Tuesday endorsed a $5 billion buyout offer from Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., sending the deal to Dow Jones' controlling Bancroft family for final approval. Dow Jones representatives were not immediately available for comment on Li.

U.S. Stocks Retreat on Earnings, Mortgage Concerns; Intel, Financials Fall

(Bloomberg) -- U.S. stocks fell after Intel
Corp.'s earnings report spurred concern profit estimates for
computer companies are too high and Bear Stearns Cos. said the
subprime mortgage crisis wiped out investors in two of its
hedge funds.

Intel, the world's biggest chipmaker, declined the most
since January and led the Dow Jones Industrial Average lower
for the first time in six days. Financial shares posted the
steepest drop in the Standard & Poor's 500 Index after Bear
Stearns said investors in the funds may not get any money back.
