Toyota Electric Car May Have Half the Range of GM's, People Familiar Say

(Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp.'s plug-in electric
car may have less than half the range of a competing vehicle
planned by General Motors Corp., people with knowledge of both
companies' development programs said.

GM wants its Chevrolet Volt to travel at least 40 miles
after being charged once at a normal household outlet, while the
Toyota model may go no more than 20 miles on a single charge,
said the people, who asked not to be identified because details
of the plans are still secret.

GLOBAL MARKETS-Stocks rally worldwide as credit markets calm

(Reuters) - Earnings from General Motors Corp. sharply exceeded
Wall Street's estimates, driving its stock up nearly 3 percent
and lifting the Dow industrials as it increased investor
optimism about U.S. corporate profits.




The broad market also was bolstered by an inflation
indicator that rose less than expected in June.

GM trounces 2nd-qtr estimates, shares surge

DETROIT, July 31 - General Motors Corp on Tuesday said it posted a quarterly profit that trounced Wall Street estimates as it benefited from cost-cutting and growing sales overseas, sending shares up as much as 6 percent.

US STOCKS-Wall St. rises on data, GM earnings

(Reuters) - NEW YORK, July 31 - U.S. stocks climbed on
Tuesday after General Motors Corp. added to optimism
about corporate earnings and a key inflation indicator showed a
smaller-than-expected rise.




GM shares jumped 6 percent to $34.56 after the blue-chip
automaker swung to a profit in the second quarter and handily

UAW's Gettelfinger Stuck Between Reuther's Legacy, `Crashing' Car Industr

(Bloomberg) -- Ron Gettelfinger, chief of the United
Auto Workers, will sit at the bargaining table with the Big
Three automakers while holding one of the weakest hands in the
72-year-old union's history. He'll also have the shadow of union
icon Walter Reuther looming over him.

Gettelfinger starts negotiating today with companies that
lost a combined $15 billion last year -- a far cry from the era
when Reuther won health insurance and pensions for the rank-and-
file during two decades running the UAW until his death in 1970.
General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler now are
looking to roll back those so-called legacy costs, which include
retiree health-care liabilities of $114 billion.

Ford submits sole bid for Romania's Daewoo Craiova

(Reuters) - Romania wants to sell a 72.4 percent stake in Daewoo Automobile Craiova. Earlier this year, Romania said it had received letters of intent from General Motors Corp. and Russian Machines, as well as Ford.




The government has previously wanted to sell 95 percent of Daewoo, by adding a 22 percent stake owned by investment company SIF Oltenia to the tender, but AVAS told Reuters the company has withdrawn from the sale.

US stock indexes fall on rate worries, GM declines

(Reuters) - U.S. stocks fell on Thursday as rising bond yields fueled concern about higher borrowing costs, offsetting earlier optimism about a $20 billion buyout of Hilton Hotels Corp.

General Motors Corp. dragged on the Dow. The largest U.S. automaker's shares fell in reaction to a steeper-than-expected drop in U.S. sales in June. On Thursday, Bear Stearns cut its recommendation on General Motors' stock.

Auto discounts deepen in June: analyst

(Reuters) - All of the six leading automakers offered bigger discounts in June than they had in May with the exception of General Motors Corp. , Edmunds said.




In a significant departure from usual practice, the three leading Japanese automakers all stepped up their discounting in the face of slack demand, Edmunds said.

US STOCKS-Indexes climb on lower bond yields

(Reuters) - NEW YORK, June 25 - U.S. stocks rose on Monday as
data on existing-home sales were in line with analysts'
forecasts, allowing investors to focus on the recent pull-back
in bond yields and the Federal Reserve's policy-setting meeting
this week.




General Motors Corp. gave a boost to the Dow after
Goldman Sachs lifted its rating on shares of the largest U.S.
automaker.

Dow Average Futures Advance as Bond Yields, Oil Drop; GM, Blackstone Gain

(Bloomberg) -- Dow Jones Industrial Average futures
rose after bond yields fell and oil prices dropped.

General Motors Corp. climbed after Goldman, Sachs & Co.
advised clients to buy shares of the biggest U.S. automaker
because the United Auto Workers union may offer larger-than-
expected concessions. Blackstone Group LP, the private-equity
firm valued at $38 billion after its initial public offering June
22, also gained.

U.S. Stocks Rally After Measure of Consumer Prices Slows; Intel Advances

(Bloomberg) -- U.S. stocks rallied for a third day
after a measure of consumer prices increased less than forecast
in May, easing inflation concern.

Intel Corp., Home Depot Inc. and General Motors Corp. led
the advance. Nymex Holdings Inc. surged after two people
familiar with the discussions said the largest energy market is
exploring a sale.

U.S. futures indicate steady-to-higher market open

(Reuters) - General Motors Corp. and bankrupt auto parts maker
Delphi Corp. are near a deal with the United Auto
Workers union that would provide a cash payout to Delphi workers
in exchange for lower hourly wages, the Detroit News reported.




By 0955 GMT, September Dow futures were up 0.1
percent, S&P futures were flat and Nasdaq futures
gained 0.2 percent.
