Toyota Electric Car May Have Half the Range of GM's, People Familiar Say

(Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp.'s plug-in electric
car may have less than half the range of a competing vehicle
planned by General Motors Corp., people with knowledge of both
companies' development programs said.

GM wants its Chevrolet Volt to travel at least 40 miles
after being charged once at a normal household outlet, while the
Toyota model may go no more than 20 miles on a single charge,
said the people, who asked not to be identified because details
of the plans are still secret.

Resona, Toyota, Idemitsu, Cabin, Japan Steel Works; Japan's Equity Preview

(Bloomberg) -- The following stocks may move in
Japanese markets on July 23. Prices are as of the close of
trading. Statements were released after the close. Stock symbols
are in parentheses.

Toyota Motor Corp. (7203 JT): Japan's biggest automaker told
Bloomberg News it will decide July 23 a schedule for restarting
production at domestic auto plants shut down for lack of parts
after a July 16 earthquake. Toyota may restart production as
early as July 24 using piston rings in inventory if Riken Corp.,
a supplier damaged in the earthquake, can repair its factories on
schedule, the Yomiuri newspaper reported July 22. Toyota's shares
rose 20 yen, or 0.3 percent, to 7,560.

Chrysler says closing of Cerberus deal very close

(Reuters) - LaSorda also said Chrysler, now the No. 4 automaker in the U.S. market, needs to close a gap in hourly labor costs with Japanese rivals making vehicles in the U.S. market.




Chrysler says its U.S. hourly labor costs, including health care, are some $30 per hour higher than equivalent costs for Japanese automakers led by Toyota Motor Corp. .

Japanese Stocks Drop on U.S. Retailers' Profit Concerns, Yen's Strength

(Bloomberg) -- Japanese stocks declined after profit
warnings from U.S. retailers increased concern the housing slump
is spreading to other parts of the economy. Toyota Motor Corp.
was poised to drop as selling pressure on exporters was amplified
by the second-biggest jump in the yen this year.

Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell 1.4 percent, its worse
decline in a month. Companies such as Sears Holdings Corp. and
Home Depot Inc. said yesterday profits may drop as sales decline,
indicating that a weak housing market and rising defaults on
subprime loans may be affecting consumer spending.

Asian Stocks Trading in U.S. Post Worst Weekly Drop in 2 Months; BHP Falls

(Bloomberg) -- Asian stocks trading in the U.S. had
their worst weekly decline in almost two months amid concern
China may boost interest rates to cool economic growth and the
damage from a collapse in U.S. subprime market may be worse than
expected.

Toyota Motor Corp. and BHP Billiton led the retreat.

Asian Stocks Gain on Yen, Commodities; Toyota Rises, China Reaches Record

(Bloomberg) -- Asian stocks rose for a third day as
prices of metals and crude oil advanced and the yen weakened
against the dollar.

BHP Billiton Ltd. rose to a third straight record, while Rio
Tinto Group became the first A$100 share on the Australian stock
exchange. Toyota Motor Corp. gained on expectations declines in
the yen will help boost exporters' dollar-denominated sales and
as a report showed U.S. core inflation slowed.

Japan Shares Rise to Highest Since February, on Easing U.S. Inflation, Yen

(Bloomberg) -- Japanese stocks advanced, driving
key indexes to the highest since February, after a report showed
U.S. core consumer prices slowed, increasing speculation Japan's
biggest overseas market will expand without adding to inflation.

Toyota Motor Corp., the world's largest automaker by market
value, climbed to the highest since March and Canon Inc., which
made almost one third of its sales in North America last year,
had the biggest gain in a month.

Asian Stocks Rebound From Two-Week Low on Fed Report; Toyota, Samsung Gain

(Bloomberg) -- Asian stocks rebounded from a two-week
low after U.S. retail sales rose more than expected and the
Federal Reserve said the world's biggest economy is growing
without stoking inflation.

Toyota Motor Corp. and Samsung Electronics Co. led exporters
higher as the Fed's comments damped speculation the U.S. will
raise interest rates. BHP Billiton Ltd. advanced to a record after
metals and crude oil prices climbed.
